Riddle Hospital receives NICHE/ABIM Trailblazer Award, recognized for longstanding commitment to improving care for older adults

Riddle Hospital NICHE ABIM Trailblazer Award

Riddle Hospital, part of Main Line Health, was awarded the 2020 Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) and ABIM Foundation Choosing Wisely®️ Trailblazer Award. The award recognizes clinical teams for their outstanding achievement in improving the quality of care for older adults by reducing tests and treatments that have little or no benefit, prioritizing patient safety and preferences, and improving care coordination.

Riddle’s clinical team was specifically recognized in two areas: the reduction of emergency department readmissions and callbacks to patients 75 and over following discharge, and the success of its Sleep Protocol Program, which encourages reducing lights and noise in a care environment to create a healthy sleep environment and promote healing.

“The Sleep Protocol Program has been a key part of Main Line Health’s efforts to reduce the incidence of delirium among senior patients. This is a collective honor for our staff who have committed to this protocol and made it such a success,” says Brian Duke, System Director of Senior Services at Main Line Health.

While Main Line Health has been a NICHE-designated health system since 2016, Riddle Hospital was inducted as a NICHE hospital in 2010. In recognition of the hospital’s decade-long commitment to senior care, NICHE recently named Riddle among its Legacy Hospitals.

“To be named a Legacy Hospital affirms the pioneering role which Riddle’s team had in being the first hospital with NICHE designation at Main Line Health,” says Duke. “We are proud of all that we have done to be a leader in senior care and a resource for seniors and their loved ones in our community, particularly in establishing an Education of Nurses for Gerontology Certification, which has helped Riddle and the entire Main Line Health system as we improve the care of older adults.”

Main Line Health is committed to serving seniors, their families and caregivers by providing free information and friendly assistance. Learn more about senior care offerings at Main Line Health, including our Senior Care Line.
